Primary Liaison Programme
The process to ensure a smooth and purposeful transition between Key Stage 2 and Tytherington High School begins in the first part of the Autumn Term. All pupils and parents are invited to an Open Evening. This allows parents and pupils to see a wide range of activities taking place, speak to teachers and pupils of the school and ask any questions they may have regarding transfer or academic provision. This is then followed by visits to each partner primary school by Mrs Healey and members of the Senior Leadership Team to meet parents and to answer any further questions that may have arisen since the Open Evening.
In February/March, Mrs Healey (Primary Liaison Coordinator) will begin the process of visiting the primary school of all the children who have been allocated places at Tytherington High School. There are two aims of this process:
- To meet the Year 6 teacher, to find out the details of academic ability, predicted National Curriculum Levels and also friendships and other extra curricular information. The school strongly believes that the primary school teacher is the person who knows your child best educationally and that their role is crucial in determining how well your son or daughter settles into life at Tytherington High School.
- Each pupil is interviewed individually, to discuss what they are looking forward to in coming to Tytherington but also what they may have concerns about, and hopefully to allay these anxieties.
There will also be visits by the schools Special Educational Needs Team to gather information on students with particular needs and to ensure that the necessary support is in place from September. These pupils are also invited to an extra taster day after the Intake Day in order to give them an opportunity to visit the school and meet staff and pupils.
Finally, in the Summer Term, Mrs Healey will begin the process of creating tutor groups. These are based on a mixture of friendship groups, appropriate working relationships and a range of academic ability. These are checked by primary school colleagues and when pupils visit for the Intake Day, they are placed in these tutor groups.
On Intake Day which is held in June/July, pupils work in their new tutor groups with a view to team building and working with their tutor. They will also experience a number of lessons and in the evening pupils and parents will attend Intake Evening. The evening gives the opportunity to meet the form tutor, senior teachers and to order items of uniform and other equipment needed in September.
Through this year long process, it is hoped that prospective pupils and their parents will be reassured about what is a significant step in schooling. Please take the opportunity to read what our present Year 7 parents thought of the transition from Primary to Tytherington High School.

HOMEWORK
Why do we give homework?
Homework is useful. It is set so that your child can practise what has been taught in class and to enable the teacher to check if your son/daughter has really understood or whether they need some more help.
Your child will have to be well organised to make sure they do their homework and hand it in at the right time. They will be able to use their THS planner to help them organise their time.
Will my child have homework every night?
That depends on their homework timetable.
There is a page in the planner for your child to fill in their homework timetable so they can plan their time.
It is important that your child writes clear details of what they have to do.
If no homework is set they must write ‘none set’ in their planner.
There is space for teachers and parents/carers to write messages.
Your child’s form tutor will check once a week that the planner is signed by a parent/guardian to ensure that we all know how your child is getting on.
Can they get help with their homework?
There is a supervised Homework Club for Year 7 students. They will be able to sit quietly and do their homework, use computers or have some help if they need it.
Homework Club will be in the LRC
3.20pm-4.20pm every Wednesday from September
Year 7 Citizenship Programme
All students will participate in ½ day or full day sessions throughout the year focussing on the different skills and attributes that we want to develop in our young adults. The programme will require students to:
- Investigate how they prefer to learn and discover their learning strengths
- Discuss how they can motivate themselves and have the self-confidence to succeed
- Learn specific strategies to improve their memory or make sense of complex information
- Work together to solve physical problems and practise their communication skills
As part of the programme, pupils will visit an Adventure Site in Buxton at the end of their first half term to learn more about their form, form tutor and their House team. The pupils will take part in team building activities and will complete challenges to reach their goal.
In July they will take part in team building activities on site including activities such as; rock climbing, absailing and problem solving.
Further information about the trip will be distributed at Intake Evening and all information will be available on the website under Yr 7. www.tytheringtonhs.co.uk
